In this study, researchers evaluated the effects of the fungicide carbendazim using a reconstructed human alveolar epithelial model. The compound was aerosolized and applied via the VITROCELL® Cloud 12 exposure system, allowing for realistic air-liquid interface conditions. While traditional 2D cell cultures showed minimal response, the 3D alveolar model revealed pronounced cytotoxic effects, including cell death, activation of caspase-3, α-tubulin disruption, and increased ROS production.
